2012 June 24 – 3rd Sunday after Pentecost

3rd Sunday after Pentecost: Nativity of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist, John

Welcome to Holy Archangels Orthodox Church (OCA)! We’re glad to have you worshipping the Holy Trinity with us! If you are new or are worshiping with us for the first time, please introduce yourself to our priest, Fr. Robert Miclean, after the service.

“Have you sinned?  Come to the church and have them cleansed.  However often you fall on your journey, as many times as that may be, you pick yourself up; in the same way, as many times as you sin, repent just as often.  Do not lose hope or be lazy, that you may not lose your hope in the heavenly good things prepared for us.  And even in your old age if you sin, repent and come to the church.  Here is the hospital (for our souls); not a tribunal.  Forgiveness is conveyed here…  God says, ‘Against Thee only I have sinned, and done evil in Thy sight’ (Psalm 50:4)… Come and see: repentance will save you.”–St. John Chrysostom

“Repentance is our accord with God for a second life.”–St. John of the Ladder

As we approach the wonderful and inspiring Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and the conclusion of our fast, we remember the heart of fasting: our repentance and advancement toward the Kingdom of Heaven.  The Apostles themselves repented of their sins, their betrayal, and in St. Paul’s case, his aggressive and murderous persecution of the Church… And the Lord Jesus Christ received them back with His loving, open arms.  And He did more than that: He made them into the great missionaries of His Church and the foremost of all the Apostles.  And so with us, the Lord receives us back when we repent, and as often as we repent.  And He gives us back to Himself not as we were before, but strengthened, revitalized, and further equipped for the working out of our salvation day by day.  Praise God for His great love and mercy for us sinners!

In Christ’s love and wishing you every blessing on this day and the Feast to come,
Fr. Robert+

Troparion         (Resurrection) Tone 2

When You descended to death, O Life Immortal,
You destroyed hell with the splendor of Your Godhead.
And when from the depths You raised the dead,
all the powers of heaven cried out://
“O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You!”

Troparion          (St John the Baptist) Tone 4
Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ,
although we cannot praise you worthily,
we honor you in love at your nativity,
for by it you ended your father’s silence and your mother’s barrenness,//
proclaiming to the world the incarnation of the Son of God!

Troparion        (Holy Archangels)  Tone 4
Commanders of the heavenly hosts,
we who are unworthy beseech you,
by your prayers encompass us beneath the wings of your immaterial glory,
and faithfully preserve us who fall down and cry to you:
“Deliver us from all harm, for you are the commanders of the powers on high!”

Kontakion         (Resurrection) Tone 2
Hell became afraid, O almighty Savior,
seeing the miracle of Your Resurrection from the tomb!
The dead arose!  Creation, with Adam, beheld this and rejoiced with You,//
and the world, my Savior, praises You forever.

Kontakion         (St John the Baptist) Tone 3
Today the formerly barren woman gives birth to Christ’s Forerunner,
who is the fulfillment of every prophecy;
for in the Jordan,
when he laid his hand on the One foretold by the Prophets,//
he was revealed as Prophet, Herald, and Forerunner of God the Word.

Kontakion        (Holy Archangels) Tone 2
Commanders of God’s armies and ministers of the divine glory,
princes of the bodiless angels and guides of mankind,
ask for what is good for us, and for great mercy,
supreme commanders of the Bodiless Hosts.
